On 19 April, AsBAA and NBAA hosted over 200 students for the annual Careers in Business Aviation Day at ABACE2018 in Shanghai. The programme, which was developed by AsBAA’s student and careers chapter, AsBAA Discovery, welcomed China’s AVIC Foundation along with industry representatives from Business Aviation operations, management, MRO, avionics and air ambulance sectors. The day was well represented by students and educators from leading universities including: the Civil Aviation University of China; Shanghai Civil Aviation College; Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Shanghai Jiaotong University.
AsBAA Chairperson Jenny Lau said in her opening remarks, “AsBAA works closely with educational institutions across Greater China and Southeast Asia to bridge the gap between next generation talent and the industry. Business and General Aviation faces a shortage of skilled workers and we must pull together to inspire young people into our wonderful industry. We encourage industry players to become more involved in AsBAA Discovery and other education based corporate social responsibility programmes for the sustainable development of Business and General aviation in Asia”.
Asia is one of the fastest developing markets for Business and General Aviation, with major growth opportunities in mainland China. Among other challenges, in Mainland China and globally, there is a sizeable gap between talent and industry, slowing aviation development and growth. The most in-demand professionals include: pilots, maintenance engineers, aviation leasing experts, legal, financial and marketing professionals and service professionals.
Head of AsBAA Discovery and member of the AsBAA Board of Governors, Sarah Kalmeta said, “As a non-profit association representing the Business and General aviation industry in Greater China and Southeast Asia, AsBAA works closely with our regional committees to organise each regional Discovery Day. We are delighted to be invited by NBAA once again to put together the Careers in Business Aviation Day at ABACE2018. We thank our members for their contribution and participation in this important initiative”.
Among other sessions, AsBAA China Committee Chairman, Rocky Zhang chaired a panel discussion entitled, “Millennials meet Industry Leaders”, whereby university students aged 16-19 interacted with industry leaders from Greater China, including representatives from TAG Aviation Asia, Embraer China, Universal Weather & Aviation and Jeppesen, a Boeing Company. The agenda was designed by Discovery to provide inspiring, yet practical guidance on entering a career in Business and General Aviation. Sessions included: Interview Techniques, Technology, Trends and Innovation and Understanding the Industry.
